Liberty, Art & Culture Seminars (LACS)

LACS is a four-day residential seminar exclusively for students or recent graduates ofmedia, literature, performing & creative arts. Students discuss and debate variety of dynamics and intricacies of economic, political, artistic, cultural and personal freedom in relation to the individual, the society and the state.


It is a platform to explore ideas in a rigorous four days where YOU do the talking; get to know REALITY with your own eyes; watch documentaries; have interactive discussions with experts and chit-chat over coffee and food!


Seminar Design

Lectures by artists, writers, journalists and development professionals: Juliet Reynolds, K        Jayasankar & Anjali Monteiro, Siddarth Bhatia, Dadi Pudumjee, Anand Patwardhan, Shohini     Ghosh, Angelie Multani, Ritu Menon, Raza Haider, Pramada Menon, Dilip Simeon, Tyler         Cowen, Syeda Imam

• Documentary screenings : "War & Peace" by Anand Patwardhan, "License Permit Raj: A View   from Below" by Madhu Kishwar; "Sex, Drugs & Consulting Adults" and "Role of Greed in           Society" by John Stossel

• Working groups : Small groups encourage participation, creativity and expression

   • Let's Talk Liberty: Explore freedom in relation to self, society and the state

   • Censorship in Literature : Reading and discussion of banned text

   • What is seen and what is unseen : Role play performed by three groups on a journalist          deputed to write a story

• Researching Reality Field Exercise: First hand research on vendors, cycle-rickshaw pullers,       autowallahs, shop owners, coolies, construction worker

How to participate?

•  Eligibility: College students currently enrolled in an undergraduate/ post-graduate program    or recent graduates from any of the following streams: media, literature, performing arts or    creative arts. We are looking for an open mind, loads of enthusiasm and a strong Desire      for CHANGE!

•  Application process: 40 students are selected through an application process.

•  Participants will bear travel costs to the venue. Room & board will be provided by CCS!
